Mitsubishi buys into 396MW Mexico project, names Vestas

Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi Corporation is buying a 34% stake in the $1bn, 396MW wind project being developed in Mexico by Mareña Renovables.

Mitsubishi says it will join a consortium that includes Australia’s Macquarie Group and Dutch pension fund PGGM to develop the wind farm in Mexico’s Oaxaca State.

The Japanese group says Vestas has been lined up to supply 132 3MW turbines for the project, which Mitsubishi claims is the largest wind farm development in Latin America.

The Danish manufacturer confirmed as long ago as March 2011 that it has held discussions with the Mareña consortium, but said no firm agreement had been signed.
