Boost for Cape Wind as second PPA lands on the table

The prospects of pioneering US offshore project Cape Wind getting built received a boost after it lined up its second power purchase agreement (PPA).

Energy suppliers NSTAR and Northeast Utilities agreed to buy output from 129MW of Cape Wind’s planned 468MW capacity – equivalent to about 27.5% of the total – for a 15-year term.

The deal was part of a package accepted by Massachusetts officials in return for allowing the two utilities to merge.

The 130-turbine Cape Wind project is planned for a site in Nantucket Sound off the state's coast and aims to become America’s first offshore wind farm.
