The first 73.5P blade rolls out

The latest symbol of the global wind industry’s Olympian drive to devise bigger and more powerful offshore turbines was unveiled last month at LM Wind Power’s blade factory in central Denmark.

Stretching 73.5 metres, the 26-tonne “high-lift” composite blade, the LM 73.5P, is the longest ever fabricated.

The new blade has been purpose-built for Alstom’s 6MW Haliade turbine, the machine that the French conglomerate is putting its money on for UK Round 3 developments and the coming French offshore tender.

“The design philosophy for the 73.5P was developed through our experience in the wind tunnel,” says LM chief technology officer Frank V Nielsen.
