In Depth: Alstom readies 6MW Haliade turbine for high seas

The nacelle of Alstom’s flagship 6MW Haliade 150 wind turbine is taking shape at the French power group’s St Nazaire fabrication yard on the Loire Estuary in Brittany, with plans to erect the first prototype onshore nearby by mid-March.

A second machine, which will feature the longest blades ever built, is in the frame for installation this summer at a grid-connected offshore test site near Belgium’s 165MW Belwind 1 wind farm.

The Haliade, which takes its name from a species of sea nymph in ancient Greek mythology, is Alstom’s gambit for the next wave of deeper-water wind farm developments.

Kitted out with 73.5-metre LM blades that create a swept area of 17,860 square metres, the turbine will feature a novel electromechanical layout marrying Alstom’s PureTorque “load-deflecting” rotor-support technology…
