Canada's Windstream, Siemens sign 300MW offshore turbine deal

Developer Windstream Energy has signed a “binding agreement” with Siemens Canada for supply of up to 130 wind turbines for its 300MW Wolfe Island Shoals offshore project in Lake Ontario, Windstream chief executive Ian Baines tells Recharge.

Financial terms were not released. The contract requires that Siemens manufacture rotor blades for the 2.3MW turbines at its plant in Tillsonburg, Ontario, which will enable Windstream to meet the provincial 50% local content requirement under the feed-in tariff programme.

Siemens recommended that the project uses the 2.3MW turbine, a small unit by global offshore standards, which the German company has employed as an onshore workhorse for years, says Baines.
