Buffett's MidAmerican makes second US solar swoop

US utility MidAmerican Energy Holdings will make its second foray into the solar generation business with the purchase of a 49% stake in the 290MW Agua Caliente PV project.

MidAmerican – part of the business empire of investment tycoon Warren Buffett – is buying the stake in the $1.8bn plant in Yuma County, Arizona, from NRG Energy.

The plant, which is being built by First Solar, is expected to be complete by 2014.

The project won a $967m loan guarantee from the US Department of Energy, and has tied-up a long-term power-purchase agreement with utility Pacific Gas and Electric for all its electricity production.
