India’s wind industry faces big challenges, but DV Giri, chairman of the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association (IWTMA), is not complaining.

That is because most of those hurdles arise from coping with an accelerating rate of growth.

“We are going through a very exciting phase,” says Giri. Since 1989, about 14.5GW of wind-­energy capacity has been installed in India, he points out. It now intends to put in place a minimum of 15-20GW in the next five years, and maybe a significantly higher amount.

Government officials now consider that India’s wind potential is not less than 100GW onshore, rather than the 45GW that had figured in official calculations. One private study talks…
