Japan’s Mitsubishi has bought a 50% stake in the UK’s Walney 1 offshore wind transmission cable.

Mitsubishi says its purchase of the half-share from Macquarie Capital Group for an undisclosed sum marks the first time a Japanese company has invested in an overseas offshore transmission link.

The Japanese group will co-own the Walney 1 cable with Barclays Infrastructure Funds Management (BIFM), which holds the other 50%.

The cable connects the 184MW Walney 1 wind project with the coast at Lancaster, northwest England.

Mitsubishi and BIFM have a licence from the UK regulator to operate the transmission link for 20 years.
