Dong confirms plans to trial Vestas 7MW offshore turbine

Wind development giant Dong Energy is to test Vestas’ new 7MW offshore turbine, potentially lining itself up as the first customer for the manufacturer’s huge new machine.

The two Danish companies will install and test the V164-7MW turbine at Dong’s demonstration site off Frederikshavn.

Installation is due in 2013 at the Denmark site, where Dong has permission to install a total of six demonstration turbines.

Vestas unveiled the V164-7MW in March, when Ditlev Engel, Vestas chief executive, described it as having “epic proportions to address energy challenges of a similar dimension”.

The V164-7MW is a bespoke offshore turbine specifically designed for the harsh conditions in northern European waters.
