The
substation
will
harness
the
electricity
generated
at
80
Siemens
3.6MW
turbines
set
35km
into
the
Baltic
Sea,
before
stepping
up
the
voltage
from
33kV
to
150kV
and
flowing
it
back
to
Rostock,
Germany.
Alstom
will
design
and
manufacture
the
electrical
components,
while
Bremerhaven-based
WeserWind,
which
is
owned
by
German
steel
processor
Georgsmarienhütte,
will
handle
the
structural
elements
and
subsea
foundations.
The
substation
will
be
as
tall
as
a
three-storey
building
and
weigh
some
2,500
tonnes
–
equivalent
to
200
two-axle
buses
–
upon
its
completion
in
late
2012.
