Virginia chosen for first US offshore wind turbine test facility

Ecofys of the Netherlands has formed a 50-50 joint venture with Real NewEnergy of the US to establish the first full-service testing and certification facility for large offshore and onshore wind turbines in North America.

The project, called Poseidon Atlantic, calls for the site on Virginia’s Eastern Shore to begin operation in fourth quarter 2012 or the first quarter of 2013, Paul Vosbeek, founding partner of Real NewEnergy tells Recharge. He says there is a global need for such facilities with manufacturers determined to push the envelope on size of wind turbines for offshore applications.

The site will be able to position 8 to 10 turbines for testing at once up to 50MW combined capacity. It will have capability to test units up to 8MW with 750-feet Log in to read complete article.
