Hunt begins for firms that are fit to bear the WindMade label

WindMade has opened its doors for applications from companies hoping to use its new Fair Trade-style eco-label and confirmed the list of standards they must meet – including sourcing at least a quarter of their electricity from wind.

The Vestas-backed non-profit organisation will accept three routes by which firms using the WindMade label can procure their power.

These are via ownership of a wind farm, through long-term wind power purchase agreements (PPAs), or by buying “high-quality” renewable-energy certificates (RECs) through WindMade-approved schemes.

If buying their own wind farm, companies must finalise the purchase less than two years after the facility has been commissioned.

Likewise, all PPA contracts must be signed within two years of the turbines being commissioned – and must have a duration of at least five years.
