Turbine installation for Thornton Bank's second phase should start next year

German renewables giant RWE Innogy has completed all 25 jacket foundations and the offshore substation for the second stage of Belgium’s 325MW Thornton Bank wind farm.

RWE says the work, which started in June, finished on schedule. The 50-metre-high, 550 tonne jacket foundations have been installed 30km from the port of Ostende in water depths of between 12 and 25 metres.

The foundations were manufactured in Hoboken near Antwerp and transported on pontoons through the Scheldt estuary, where they were installed on top of pre-installed piles.

RWE and its partners plan to complete the inter-array cabling for the wind farm by the end of the year, with turbine installation due to commence at the beginning of 2012.
