GE 'planning new plant' in Brazilian wind hotspot of Bahia

GE plans to open a R$45m ($24m) wind equipment plant in Bahia, Brazil, and has sold 378MW of turbines for winning projects in last month’s federal tender, it is reported.

GE will supply the 1.6MW machines to developers who secured contracts in Brazil's A-3 power tender, in which prices hit new lows, say local news sources.

The new Bahia factory would join the US industrial giant's plant at Campinas, São Paulo. GE has not yet confirmed the reports.

Spain’s Gamesa and France’s Alstom have already opened factories in Bahia, which is fast becoming a hotspot for manufacturers and developers alike.

During the past three federal power tenders, 52 new wind projects in the state representing investments of R$6bn have obtained 20-year contracts.
