Group moving forward with New York City area wind project

A consortium that includes the New York Power Authority (NYPA) has filed a preliminary application with the US Interior Department (DOI) to lease about 329sq km of the Atlantic Ocean to site a wind farm up to 350MW in the first stage of development.

Soon after the announcement, developer Deepwater Wind said it will submit a bid once the consortium issues a tender for project development.

The Long Island–New York City Offshore Wind Collaborative issued a study showing that the proposed wind farm located 13 to 17 miles (20-27km) off the Rockaway Peninsula coast and Long Island could create up to $2.7bn in new economic activity.

This would include between 2,300 and 4,700 jobs during construction and 85 to 170 on a permanent basis, depending on project size which could double to 700MW…
