Texas transmission buildout to cost 38% over first estimate

The cost of building transmission in Texas to bring wind power to load centers is now estimated at $6.79bn, up from $6.56bn on 31 March and a 38% increase from 2008 when regulators approved the plan.

The estimate was made by consultant RS&H as part of a quarterly progress update it does for the state Public Utilities Commission on 180 projects underway, or to be carried out, by 11 transmission and distribution companies under the Competitive Renewable Energy Zones (CREZ) programme. Data used was good through 30 June.

The new number, if it proves accurate, amounts to $270 for each of 25.1 million state residents. Terry Hadley, a PUC spokesman, tells Recharge that the 11 companies could initiate a rate proceeding this year to Log in to read complete article.
