Forewind hands Atkins met-mast challenge for giant Dogger Bank

Met-masts help turbines make the most of wind conditions offshore

The Forewind consortium has chosen UK engineering consultancy Atkins to design the meteorological masts for the giant Dogger Bank offshore wind project.

The met-masts will gather weather data to help ensure that the wind turbines at the 9GW development – the largest offshore zone ever awarded – are designed and orientated to maximise its power generating capacity.

Atkins will begin by carrying out the conceptual appraisal for the met-mast sub-structures, which will be located in water depths of 22-25 metres, before performing the detailed design for the foundation and topsides.

“Met-masts provide valuable information for characterising the long-term environmental conditions and wind resource that inform the economic viability of a wind project,” says
