Massachusetts-Rhode Island offshore wind area opens in US

The US government is seeking private sector interest for commercial wind energy development off the coasts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts, a move Interior Department (DOI) officials on Wednesday describe as a major advance for the fledgling American offshore industry.

The 285-square-mile (738.1sq km) zone in the Atlantic Ocean is between Block Island, about 21km off the Rhode Island coast, and Martha’s Vineyard, an island south of Massachusetts. It is within a larger zone that was identified for potential wind energy use by both states after several years of research and consultation.

“By focusing on priority areas with high wind potential and fewer conflicts, and conducting early, coordinated reviews, we can accelerate the leasing process and drive investment, development, and jobs to Rhode Island and Massachusetts,” says Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. Developers…
