Rhode Island court upholds pilot offshore wind farm power deal

The Rhode Island Supreme Court has upheld a 20-year power purchase agreement between utility National Grid and Deepwater Wind for a 30MW demonstration offshore wind project, improving chances that the $205m project will advance.

Two local businesses had tried to get the deal overturned on the basis that the power price to be paid by the utility was too high.

Deepwater chief executive William Moore says the unanimous ruling “solidifies Rhode Island’s position as a national leader in building a clean energy future for our country.”

The developer will now proceed with permitting and construction planning phases of the project, with commercial operation targeted for 2013 or 2014.
