First US offshore wind project passes key milestone

Fishermen's Energy wants to run a cable below Atlantic City's famous boardwalk

New Jersey regulators have issued key environmental permits that will allow developer Fishermen’s Energy to build the first US offshore wind power demonstrator near Atlantic City.

Rhonda Jackson, a spokeswoman for Fishermen’s Energy tells Recharge: “This is huge. We are very, very close to starting the project."

The developer, a consortium formed by several US East Coast fishing companies, plans to place six turbines in shallow waters about 4.5km from shore. The turbines will have maximum 25MW total combined capacity.

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) decision comes after a comprehensive technical and legal review of the project application, and follows a public consultation period which encountered no opposition. The DEP permits cover coastal development…
