Nordex unveils 6MW unit for European offshore wind

German wind turbine developer Nordex has unveiled plans for an ambitious campaign in the European offshore market, led by its new 6MW “efficiency class” direct-drive machine the N150/6000.

The new turbine will undergo prototype testing during the next two years, with the first N150/6000 installed offshore at the German Baltic Sea's Arcadis Ost 1 wind farm in 2014. Up to 70 will then be deployed at the development in 2015, says Nordex, which has a 40% stake in Arcadis Ost 1.

The new machine follows the trend of third-generation wind turbines, which are characterised by a substantially greater nominal output and lower specific weights, says Nordex chief executive Thomas Richterich.
