30MW Kahuku Wind is first completed under LGP

First Wind began commercial operations of its 30MW Kahuku Wind project in Hawaii, marking the first generating project financed under the Department of Energy’s Loan Guarantee Program to reach completion.









The project, on the North Shore of the island of Oahu, received a $117m loan guarantee to aide the developer in obtaining financing.

Kahuku stands out for its use of a 10MW battery energy-storage system manufactured by Xtreme Power of Texas to help integrate the output of its 12 Clipper Liberty 2.5MW turbines. The storage component is part of what helped land the federal financial support, which is meant to spur innovative renewable technologies into commercialization.
