Canadian utility, tribes to site wind farm on Lake Huron island

Northland Power and a group of tribes in Canada anticipate that initial site preparation work for a 60MW wind farm could begin as early as this summer on Manitoulin Island in Lake Huron, the utility’s project manager Gordon Potts tells Recharge.

At 2,766sq km, Manitoulin is the largest island in a freshwater lake in the world. Archeological findings show that Native Canadians have lived there for at least 10,000 years.

The project was not affected by the recent Ontario decision to slap a moratorium on offshore wind development in the Canadian side of the Great Lakes, as Premier Dalton McGuinty’s government considers it to be on land.
