Ontario shunts offshore wind plans into reverse

Ontario has abruptly imposed a moratorium on offshore wind projects along the Canadian side of the Great Lakes, citing the need for further scientific research on the environmental effects of placing turbines and support infrastructure in the water.

“Offshore wind on freshwater lakes is a recent concept that requires a cautious approach until the science of environmental impact is clear,” says Environment Minister John Wilkinson. ”In contrast, the science concerning land based wind is extensive.”

The move sent waves through a global industry that viewed the province’s waters as among the most promising areas for offshore wind development in North America. Developers and leading turbine vendors such as Gamesa, General Electric, Siemens and Vestas now face policy unpredictability from Premier Dalton McGuinty’s government.
