Update: France outlines five offshore zones for 3GW tender

President Nicolas Sarkozy confirmed that France will launch a tender for five offshore wind farms totalling 3GW in May, with the winners to be chosen in the first half of 2012.

The announcement of the much-delayed tender set France’s renewables sector abuzz, though some observers believe the government’s timetable – to have all 3GW in place by 2015 – is unrealistic, given the lack of a local supply chain.

Though speculation has built for months over the shape of the tender, the government for the first time specified which zones will be available to developers, including:

  • A 750MW site off Tréport covering 110 sq km.
  • A 500MW site off Fecamp covering 88 sq km.
  • A 500MW site off Courseulles-sur-Mer covering 77 sq km.
