Lake Erie US offshore wind project gains momentum

Developers of a five-turbine pilot offshore wind farm in Lake Erie have signed an option with the state of Ohio to lease submerged acreage for project development.

The accord was signed by former Governor Ted Strickland before he left office today. It gives Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation (LEEDCo) and its partner Freshwater Wind the exclusive right for up to four years to apply for, and negotiate, a final lease for 5,707 acres (23sq km) in Lake Erie at a site approximately seven miles (11.2km) northwest of Cleveland.
