Ireland moves to establish offshore wind feed-in tariff

Ireland will by the end of the year seek EU approval for its long-awaited offshore wind feed-in tariff, as it looks to renewables to pull it out of its recession-induced financial coma.

Irish Energy Minister Eamon Ryan says he will submit an application to Brussels “within weeks” for a plan that would allow offshore wind farm owners to net €140 per MWh in subsidies, in addition to the market price for electricity.

The announcement comes in tandem with the publication of Ireland’s Offshore Renewable Energy development plan, which has gone out for a two-month public consultation.

The plan concludes that Ireland can by 2050 produce 10 times its electricity demand from offshore renewables “without significant environmental impacts”.
