Viking scales back plans for 540MW Shetland wind farm

Bowing to pressure from local opposition groups, Viking Energy has scaled backed plans for its 540MW wind farm on the mainland of Scotland’s Shetland, though the project still faces a rough ride in the months ahead.

Viking submitted its original application for a 150-turbine wind farm in May 2009 after six years of front-end development work, but the project immediately became a lightning rod for controversy, with more than 10% of Shetland’s 22,000 people filing objections.

The project, which would be one of the largest community-owned wind farms in Europe, is being jointly developed by Scottish and Southern Energy.
