Vattenfall's completed Thanet gives UK more than 5GW of wind

Vattenfall formally clipped the ribbon at its 300MW Thanet wind farm off the southeast coast of England, tipping the UK past the 5GW milestone for total installed wind capacity.

The 100-turbine Thanet will remain the world’s largest offshore wind project until the London Array is finished around 2013. It required an unprecedented level of operational effort and financial commitment from Vattenfall.

Rather than working through one engineering, procurement and construction contractor, Vattenfall elected to manage the project in house, including co-ordinating with the more than 70 firms that had a hand in bringing Thanet to completion.

Thanet stands 12km offshore in the Thames Estuary, and is connected via two 15km subsea export cables to an onshore switching station at Richborough, Kent.
