Goldwind is planning to invest $6.8m to produce 6MW turbines

China’s Xinjiang Goldwind Science and Technology is planning to invest $45.9m yuan ($6.8m) to produce 6MW turbines, after having largely completed its preliminary research into developing 5MW turbines.

The investment is subject to approval by the board.

The detailed design and components of the first 6MW direct-drive turbines are expected to be finalised by 2011. The first installation is slated for the end of June 2012.

Goldwind did not reveal if it has wind-farm contracts to install 6MW turbines.

As for the 5MW turbines, the Shenzhen-listed company is expected to launch them commercially by 2011.

The Chinese company says it has to catch up with the global market trend of larger turbines, especially for China’s growing offshore wind farms.
