Indian Railways seeks to reduce carbon emissions by building wind farms

State-owned Indian Railways is spending 1.4bn rupees ($29.9m) to build two wind farms with a total power generating capacity of 21MW by 2011.

The deeper expansion into the wind business is an attempt by the railway company to reduce carbon emissions and combat rising energy costs.

It is currently operating a 10.5MW wind farm at Tirunelveli in southern Tamil Nadu state.

The new wind farms will be located along the coastal belts of Tamil Nadu and the desert area of Jaisalmer in northwest Rajasthan state.

A senior railway ministry official was reported saying that they have “finalised plans for setting up” the two wind farms of 10.5MW each.
