Georgia to support regional ocean wind development

Georgia intends to join the Atlantic Offshore Wind Energy Consortium, which was recently formed by the US federal government and 10 East Coast states to promote development of wind resources on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS).

The US Interior Department represents federal interests in the consortium. State members are Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Rhode Island and Virginia.

Aside from Georgia, Florida and South Carolina are the other states with Atlantic Ocean coastline that are not consortium members. Georgia and South Carolina have taken steps to explore feasibility of harvesting their offshore wind resource, while Florida’s focus has been on biofuels and solar power.

A spokesman for Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue did not set a date for joining the consortium.…
