Cape Wind project draws support from six US governors

Six Northeast governors have urged US Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to approve the controversial Cape Wind project in Massachusetts, whose backers have spent nine years and $45m to obtain state and federal regulatory approvals.

Salazar is expected to rule by Friday on the 130-turbine project, which aims to be the first US offshore wind farm. His involvement resulted after developer Cape Wind Associates , and other project supporters and opponents reached an impasse.

Nantucket Sound, where the turbines would be placed, is off Cape Cod, one of the wealthiest and most picturesque locations along the Eastern Seaboard. The Kennedy family, whose compound in Hyannis Port faces the proposed site, has been among the most vocal project opponents.
