Hundreds of offshore wind turbines across the North Sea are being checked for a construction fault that has required repairs to correct a weakness in the structure that connects the tower to its monopile foundation.

Major wind farm operators DONG Energy, Vattenfall and E.ON are all checking turbines after a weakness was discovered in transition pieces at Dutch wind farm Egmond aan Zee late last year, which set alarm bells ringing.

The structure is not solid enough to withstand the stresses and strains imposed by turbines operating in harsh offshore conditions. It was discovered that transition pieces had moved a few centimetres.
