Virginia developers seek federal offshore wind leases

Two Virginia companies are seeking federal regulatory approval to lease acreage in the Atlantic Ocean to develop wind farms offshore Virginia Beach. They are members of a coalition set up last year to develop opportunities in the US state.

Apex Wind Energy , based in Charlottesville, wants to lease 116,000 acres for generation of up to 1,500 megawatts of electricity. The number of turbines that could be placed there is under study.

A spokesman for Seawind Renewable Energy, located near Richmond, tells Recharge that it is interested in siting 240 turbines offshore that could provide power for more than 250,000 homes annually. He declined to provide more details about the proposal or the company.
