DONG cuts the ribbon at 209MW Horns Rev 2 project

From its perch 30km off the coast of Denmark, DONG Energy’s recently inaugurated 209 megawatt (MW) Horns Rev 2 project has officially become the world’s largest operational offshore wind farm.

Horns Rev, a shallow area that begins 15km off the coast of Denmark’s Jutland, is the site of the first offshore wind farm built in the North Sea. The 160MW Horns Rev 1, which uses 80 Vestas 2MW turbines, began feeding the Danish electricity grid in 2002.

Construction on Horns Rev 2 began in early 2008, and the farm now boasts 91 operational Siemens 2.3MW turbines. The two phases combined produce enough electricity for 350,000 Danish homes.
