EC gives nod to Iberdrola's Gamesa acquisition

The European Commission has cleared the way for Iberdrola Renovables to acquire Gamesa’s European windfarm development operations, concluding the deal will not “significantly impede” competition.

The EC’s decision follows a June agreement that saw Iberdrola Renovables buy Gamesa’s windpower projects in the United Kingdom, Mexico and the Dominican Republic -- totalling 900 MW -- for approximately €65m ($82m).

A new company will be formed under the planned takeover, fusing Gamesa’s European development projects with a number of existing windfarms owned by Iberdrola Renovables. The new company will be solely controlled by Iberdrola Renovables, with Gamesa staying on as a non-controlling shareholder.
