Tractebel Energia, the Brazilian subsidiary of GDF Suez, has unveiled plans to develop a new 97.2MW wind farm in the state of Ceará – as well as adding 300MW of wind to its portfolio through acquisitions.
Tractebel Energia will invest R$459.4m ($207m) to develop the Santa Monica wind power complex in the northeastern state.
The Ceará development is made up of the 29.7MW Trairi II, the 18.9MW Cacimbas, the 18.9MW Santa Mônica and the 29.7MW Santa Mônica II wind farms.
The complex should start full commercial operations by 2016. All the power generated should be sold on the non-regulated market, the company said in a statement.
As Santa Monica is located close to the operating Trairi complex, it should be able to share existing substations and transmission lines.
Separately, Tractebel Energia agreed to buy a further 300MW of wind from local developer CLWP and Portuguese-owned renewable energy investment group Quifel Energy Brasil Participações for R$35.1m.
It complements deals initially signed in January 2013, when Tractebel bought from CLWP 206MW in projects known as Campo Largo for R$22m. It agreed to an option to acquire CLWP's 150MW wind power portfolio for R$16.5m, which was also finally approved in the same board meeting this month.
The transaction for the acquisition of the new projects, denominated phase 3 of the Campo Largo complex, will be concluded when contract commitments that allow the development of the wind farms are met.
The 10 new projects of Campo Largo phase 3 that Tractebel agreed to acquire are located in the northeastern state of Bahia, in the towns of Santo Sé and Umburanas.
Both transactions were approved by the local company's board of directors on April 8.
The board also approved plans to study the possibility of developing solar power projects in the same locations of the 22 wind farms that make up the three stages of the Campo Largo complex.
Tractebel has five operating wind power farms in Brazil with a total capacity of 121MW. The company focuses on selling power on the non-regulated market.
