ERCOT boosts wind energy use

Wind power generation was a record 9.9% of the energy mix within the Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) region in 2013, up from 9.2% a year earlier and double 4.9% in 2008.

Overall energy consumption last year was 331.6 million MWh in ERCOT, 324.8 million MWh in 2012.

Wind energy’s share of generation is expected to continue increasing through 2016 with developers requesting 22.6GW of interconnection with ERCOT. About 20% to 25% of that amount is expected to be built.

ERCOT manages the flow of electric power to 23 million customers within most of Texas, representing 85% of the state’s electric load.

Texas is by far the largest US wind state with more than 12GW of installations.
