Acciona cuts workforce at US plant

Acciona Windpower this week laid off 40 employees at its nacelle production plant in Iowa, saying the “very difficult” decision resulted because of a downturn in US turbine orders.

"US wind development declined sharply over the past year for reasons beyond our control,” Acciona says in a statement. “The reduction in our work force is necessary to meet the current volume of production while we work to complete new turbine supply agreements.”

Developers rushed to complete projects last year in anticipation that Congress might not extend the federal production tax credit through 2013. It eventually did in early January. While some orders have come in since, turbine manufacturers have little business in the first and second quarters.
