Google invests in Texas project

Google says will invest $75m in the 182MW Panhandle 2 wind farm near Amarillo, Texas, that developer Pattern Energy Group expects to have operational in the fourth quarter.

The investment is Google’s fifteenth in renewable energy projects globally and second in Texas. In 2013, the internet giant invested $200m in the 161MW Spinning Spur wind farm owned by EDF Renewable Energy.

In addition, Google is buying wind from the 240MW Happy Hereford project, also outside Amarillo, that is due for full commercial operation this year.

Google has set a goal of operating its US data centers with renewable energy.
