Earlier this week the AWC consortium, which is led by transmission company Trans-Elect, and counts Google, Japan’s Marubeni and Belgian grid operator Elia among its early sponsors, confirmed that the first 3GW section will be sited off the coast of New Jersey.

The project will be built over three phases, with construction at the first slated to run from 2016-2019.

For the first phase, Bechtel, a major EPC player in the US wind and solar space, and a growing presence in European renewables, will design and install the onshore piece and one offshore converter station – as well as overseeing the installation of the high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables.
