This “steel in the water” officially marked the beginning of construction for the nation’s first commercial-scale offshore wind farm — the five-turbine, 30MW Block Island array in shallow Rhode Island state waters.
Developer Deepwater Wind expects to have the landmark project up and running in the fourth quarter of 2016, fulfilling President Barack Obama’s pledge to “stand up” a sector that he and other advocates believe will play a major role in America’s clean-energy future.
