Today renewables account for about 5% of Alberta’s power, and wind developers have been walking away from projects in the western Canadian province in recent years.

Coal currently accounts for 55% of the electricity consumed in Alberta, home of the oil sands. Two-thirds of that generation will be replaced over the next 15 years by renewables – and “primarily” by wind power – with the other one-third to be replaced by gas, Notley says.
