Brazil's Alto Sertao outstrips plan

The Alto Sertao I wind complex, owned by Brazilian independent power producer Renova Energia, produced almost 30% more electricity in its first 21 months of operation than anticipated in the 2009 auction that secured it a supply deal.

Renova said measurements at the 14 wind farms that make up the complex showed a total production of 2.49TWh in the period, compared to the 1.95TWh it sold in the auction process.

Alto Sertao I has a capacity of 293.6MW and is made up of 184 GE 1.6-XLE turbines of 1.6MW capacity.

Renova inaugurated the complex in July 2012.

Brazilian wind farms have often shown superior capacity factors to other countries, and the state of Bahia has one of the nation's highest because of its regular, strong winds.

Renova, which has other projects under development in the same area, said that the results “reinforce the region's wind potential”.
