China 'to set emissions cap'

China is poised to set a cap on CO2 emissions for the first time, it was reported today.

The country will write an absolute cap on carbon into its next five-year plan effective from 2016, Reuters quotes a senior government climate change adviser as saying.

China currently focuses on limiting carbon emissions by linking them to economic growth, but its government has become increasingly anxious about levels of pollution in the country and speculation that a cap is on the cards first emerged last year.

The report comes a day after US President Barack Obama unveiled his own plans to control emissions from America's power fleet, and would represent a boost for climate change campaigners and the renewables industry.
