Aibel gets Statoil floater work

Norwegian energy services group Aibel has been hired to work on the floating offshore wind array planned off Scotland by compatriot Statoil.

Aibel will carry out a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study, and then engineering management for the development of turbine substructures for the Buchan Deep project, the next stage of Statoil’s Hywind concept.

Buchan Deep, which will be the UK’s first floating wind farm, will comprise five 6MW floating turbines operating in water depths exceeding 100 metres off the Aberdeenshire coast.

Aibel claimed the NKr40m ($6.5m) contract will benefit from its experience with the converter platform for the DolWin Beta offshore wind grid-link project. The contractor said the project will wrap up in 2017.
