EnBW sells onshore wind stake

German utility EnBW is selling 20% of its onshore wind business to a group of 12 municipal energy companies from its home state of Baden-Württemberg.

The onshore portfolio consists of 156MW of turbines at 17 plants across Germany.

EnBW, one of Germany’s top four utilites, will continue to run the plants. No value was given for the stake.

It said the deal will give it the financial leeway to develop more wind projects.

Like its peers, EnBW has been hit hard by the crunch of profitability in the German conventional generation sector.

In May it confirmed its ambition to double its operational wind base to 360MW and expand its development pipeline to 1GW.

EnBW is pursuing onshore wind opportunities in Turkey and commissioning the 288MW Baltic 2 offshore plant in the German Baltic.
