RES Canada certifies battery system

Renewable Energy Systems Canada has obtained final certification for a 4MW lithium battery system that it has deployed under a three-year agreement with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) in Ontario.

RES Canada developed and built the system located west of London that IESO will use to help regulate frequency on its system, the second largest in Canada. IESO has the largest amount of intermittent energy sources such as wind and solar on its grid in the country.

"Alternative technologies on the power grid are gaining momentum," says IESO chief executive Bruce Campbell. “This is the first grid-connected battery on the IESO's system. The experience we gain will help demonstrate how this technology can help us balance power flows, and ultimately maintain reliability." 

This includes the unique operating characteristics at the facility that will enable it to contribute to Ontario's energy needs in a variety of ways while complementing the performance of existing generators.

The project utilizes lithium iron phosphate, an inherently safe variant of lithium battery chemistry, and consists of two containers that house batteries weighing approximately 20 tons each, as well as a third container that converts the direct current (DC) output to alternating current (AC) for the grid.

Navigant Research expects the global market for energy storage to grow rapidly in the coming years. It estimates worldwide revenue from advanced batteries for utility-scale energy storage applications will grow from $164m this year to more than $2.5bn in 2023.
