Walney Extension plan with Davey

The UK Planning Inspectorate has given its recommendations to energy and climate change secretary Ed Davey for Dong Energy’s proposed 660MW Walney Extension offshore wind project off northwest England.

Davey is expected to make a decision on whether the project can go ahead in November, after which there will be a six-week period in which the verdict can be challenged.

Dong says if it is granted development consent, it will look to make a final investment decision on the project next year.

The Walney Extension is located around 19km from the English coast to the west and northwest of Dong’s existing Walney 1 and 2 wind farms.

The project was one of five offshore wind farms among the first wave of renewables projects to get Contracts for Difference under the UK’s new national support mechanism.
